Climate chart - Stavropol
The climate of Stavropol is continental, with cold winters and hot summers.
Stavropol (formerly Voroshilovsk), is a city of 435,000 inhabitants, the administrative center of the territory (krai) of the same name, located in southern European Russia, at 45 degrees north latitude and at an altitude of 500/600 meters (1,600/2,000 feet).
To the south is the Caucasus mountain range. About 200 km (125 mi) to the south, on the mountain ridge, is the border with Georgia.

Precipitation is not abundant, since it amounts to about 570 millimeters (22.5 inches) per year. Winter is the driest season, while the rainiest months are May and June, due to thunderstorms, which then gradually decrease during the rest of the summer.

Winter, from December to February, is cold: the average temperature in January is around -1 °C (30 °F).
Fog can form during periods of stable weather.
Due to the southern position, the winter is not as cold as in Moscow and in the inland areas of Russia, although the altitude makes it a bit colder than lowland cities like Grozny. However, southern currents can bring mild periods, with highs of 12/13 °C (54/55 °F) and above.
However, cold waves are also possible, during which the temperature can drop to -20 °C (-4 °F) or even lower. The coldest record is -28.3 °C (-18.9 °F), set in February 2012.

Summer, from June to August, is hot and sunny, with some rain and thunderstorms. The average in July is around 23 °C (73.5 °F).
Sometimes there can be heat waves, during which the temperature can reach and exceed 35 °C (95 °F). The hottest record is 39.7 °C (103.5 °F), set in August 2006.
