The climate of Smolensk is continental, with very cold winters and relatively warm summers.
Smolensk is a city of 330,000 inhabitants located in European Russia, on the banks of the Dnieper River, at an altitude of 240 meters (785 feet) and almost 55 degrees north latitude. About 55 km (35 mi) to the west is the border with Belarus, while Moscow is located 360 km (225 mi) to the northeast.

Precipitation is moderate, amounting to about 740 millimeters (29 inches) per year. As often happens in cold climates, the rainiest season is summer.

Winter, from November to March, is very cold: the average temperature in January and February is around -6 °C (21 °F). The sky is often cloudy, and light snow often falls.
The ground is usually covered in snow, although there may be periods when the temperature rises above freezing, usually only slightly, and rain, drizzle or rain mixed with snow can occur.
During cold spells, the temperature drops to -20 °C (-4 °F) or below almost every year, and has sometimes dropped below -30 °C (-22 °F), although the last time was in February 2012 with -30.2 °C (-22.4 °F).
The coldest record is -37.9 °C (-36.2 °F), set at the end of January 1956.
The coldest month was January 1987, with a daily average of -17.4 °C (0.7 °F).
On the other hand, in the exceptionally mild winter of 2020, the daily average from December to February was 0.3 °C (32.5 °F), and the extreme minimum for the entire season was -13 °C (8.5 °F).

Summer, from June to August, is very mild or pleasantly warm, with an acceptable amount of sunshine, but also with fairly frequent rains and thunderstorms. The average in July is 18.5 °C (65 °F).
Sometimes there can be hot periods in which the temperature exceeds 30 °C (86 °F). The hottest record is 37.2 °C (99 °F), set in August 2010. The summer of 2010 was very warm, in fact the average maximum was 29.2 °C (84.5 °F) in July and 27.1 °C (80.8 °F) in August.
