Climate chart - Saratov
The climate of Saratov is continental, with very cold winters, during which the temperature is normally below freezing, and hot summers.
Saratov is a city of 900,000 inhabitants, the capital of the homonymous oblast', located in European Russia, at 51 degrees north latitude and 710 km (440 mi) southeast of Moscow.
On the other side of the Volga, the longest river in Europe, lies the city of Engels.
Due to its location, far from the Atlantic Ocean and relatively close to the steppe of Central Asia (the border with Kazakhstan is about 150 kilometers or 95 miles to the southeast), the climate is quite arid, furthermore, summers are hotter than in Moscow and in central and northern European Russia, though not as hot in Volgograd and the south of Russia.

Precipitation is not abundant, since it amounts to about 470 millimeters (18.5 inches) per year. Unlike in Moscow and in central and northern European Russia, summer is not the rainiest season, although there is a certain increase in rainy days, mainly due to thunderstorms, at least in the first part (June-July).

Winter, from November to March, is very cold: the average temperature in January is about -8 °C (17.5 °F). The sky is often cloudy, and light snow often falls. Sometimes fog can form.
During cold waves, the temperature can drop below -30 °C (-22 °F), although in recent years this has happened more rarely than in the past.
The coldest record is -37.3 °C (-35.1 °F), set in January 1942.
In February 1954 and February 1956 the monthly daily mean was -20.6 °C (-5.1 °F).

Summer, from June to August, is hot and sunny. The average in July is around 23 °C (73.5 °F).
Sometimes there can be heat waves, during which the temperature can reach and exceed 35 °C (95 °F). During the exceptional summer of 2010, the temperature reached 38 °C (100.4 °F) in June, 40.9 °C (105.6 °F) in July, when the average maximum was 34.8 °C (94.6 °F), and 37.9 °C (100.2 °F) in August.
