Saransk has a continental climate, with cold winters, during which the temperature is normally below freezing, and warm summers.
Saransk is a city of 320,000 inhabitants, the capital of the Republic of Mordovia, located in European Russia, at 54 degrees north latitude and 510 km (315 mi) east-southeast of Moscow.

Precipitation is not abundant, since it amounts to about 500 millimeters (20 inches) per year. As often happens in cold climates, the rainiest season is summer.

Winter, from November to March, is very cold: the average temperature in January is around -9.5 °C (15 °F). The sky is often cloudy, and light snow often falls.
The ground is usually covered in snow, although there may be periods when the temperature rises above freezing, usually only slightly, and rain, drizzle or rain mixed with snow can occur.
During cold waves, the temperature can drop below -30 °C (-22 °F).
Occasionally, it has dropped below -40 °C (-40 °F).

Summer, from June to August, is quite warm, with an acceptable amount of sunshine, but also with relatively frequent rains and thunderstorms. The average in July is around 20 °C (68 °F).
Sometimes there can be hot periods in which the temperature reaches or exceeds 32/33 °C (90/91 °F). The hottest records are around 38/39 °C (100/102 °F).
