Climate chart - Samara
Samara has a continental climate, with cold winters, during which the temperature is normally below freezing, and warm summers.
Samara (formerly known as Kuybyshev) is a city of 1,150,000 inhabitants located in European Russia, at 53 degrees north latitude and 865 km (535 mi) southeast of Moscow. At the city, the Samara River enters the Volga, the largest river in Europe, which rises northwest of Moscow and flows into the Caspian Sea. About 55 km (35 mi) northwest, in another bend of the river, is the city of Togliatti.

Although it is located more to the south, Samara is also colder in winter than Moscow, as it is located further from the Atlantic Ocean and closer to Siberia.

Precipitation is not abundant, amounting to about 550 millimeters (21.5 inches) per year, but it is well distributed throughout the seasons. It usually occurs in the form of snow from November to March, but sometimes also in October and April. Instead, in late spring and summer, it can occur in the form of thunderstorms.

Winter, from November to March, is very cold: the average temperature in January and February is about -9.5 °C (15 °F). The sky is often cloudy, and light snow often falls.
During cold waves, the temperature can drop below -30 °C (-22 °F), although in recent years this has happened more rarely. Occasionally, as in January 1942 and in December 1978-January 1979, it has dropped below -40 °C (-40 °F). The coldest record is -44 °C (-47 °F), set in January 1979. In February 1954, the monthly daily mean was -21.9 °C (-7.4 °F).

Summer, from June to August, is warm and sunny enough. The average in July, close to 22 °C (71.5 °F), represents the threshold, according to the Köppen classification, between the humid continental climate with warm summer (Dfb), and the humid continental climate with hot summer (Dfa).
Sometimes there can be heat waves, during which the temperature can reach and exceed 35 °C (95 °F), and which can be interrupted by strong thunderstorms and gusts of wind. During the exceptional summer of 2010, the temperature reached 39.4 °C (102.9 °F) in July, when the average maximum was 32.7 °C (90.9 °F), and 39.9 °C (103.8 °F) in August.
