Climate chart - Rostov
The climate of Rostov-on-Don is continental, with cold winters and hot, sunny summers.
Rostov-on-Don is a city of 1,100,000 inhabitants located in southern European Russia, at 47 degrees north latitude and about 950 km (600 mi) south of Moscow.
The Don River, after flowing through the southern part of the city, about 30 km (18 mi) further west enters the Taganrog Bay, which is part of the Sea of Azov, a closed sea belonging to the Black Sea. During the winter, the Sea of Azov can freeze, while this happens much more rarely in the rest of the Black Sea.

Precipitation is not abundant, amounting to about 615 millimeters (24 inches) per year, however, it is well distributed throughout the year. In winter, precipitation can appear in the form of snow, and in late spring and summer in the form of thunderstorms.

Winter, from December to February, is cold: the average temperature in January is about -3 °C (26.5 °F).
During periods of stable weather, fog can form.
Due to the southern location and the proximity to the Black Sea, winters are less cold than in Moscow and in the interior of Russia, and sometimes southern currents can raise the temperature several degrees above freezing, so much so that it can rain even in the middle of winter. In January 2007, the temperature reached 14 °C (27 °F), and the average maximum was 5.5 °C (41.9 °F).
However, cold waves are also possible here, during which the temperature can drop to -20 °C (-4 °F) or even below. The coldest record is -31.9 °C (-25.4 °F), set in January 1940. In 1929, the temperature dropped to -30.9 °C (-23.4 °F) in February and to -28.1 °C (-18.6 °F) in March. After 2000, it dropped to -28 °C (-18.4 °F) in January 2006.

Summer, from June to August, is hot and sunny, although there are also days with rain or thunderstorms. The average in July is around 24 °C (75 °F).
Sometimes there can be heat waves, during which the temperature can exceed 35 °C (95 °F), and sometimes even reach 40 °C (104 °F).
During the exceptional summer of 2010, the temperature reached 40.1 °C (104.2 °F) in August, a month in which the average maximum was 34.5 °C (94.1 °F). In July 2020, the hottest record was broken with 40.2 °C (104.4 °F).
