Average weather, temperature, rainfall, sunshine hours

Pechora has a
subarctic climate, with long, cold winters and mild summers.
Pechora is a city of 43,000 inhabitants, located in European Russia, in the Komi Republic, at 65 degrees north latitude and 1,600 kilometers (1,000 miles) northeast of Moscow.
The Pechora River flows through the city and then heads north towards the Arctic Ocean.
About 100 km (62 mi) to the east of Pechora are the
Ural Mountains, which separate European Russia from the Asian part, called Siberia. The mountains are not very high, however, in this northern part is the highest peak of the entire range, Mount
Narodnaja, 1,894 meters (6,214 feet) high. In this area, the tree line, above which the average temperature does not exceed 10 °C for at least three months and therefore trees do not grow, is about 600 meters (2,000 ft) above sea level.
Here we find the
Virgin Komi Forests, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which includes the Jugyd va National Park and the Pechora-Ilych Nature Reserve.
Precipitation is not abundant, amounting to about 635 millimeters (25 inches) per year. As often happens in cold climates, the rainiest season is summer.
Precipitation generally occurs in the form of snow from October to May, and predominantly from mid-October to late April. However, it can occasionally snow even in June and September.
Winter is long and cold. The daily average temperature is around or below freezing from October to April. The average in January is about -18.5 °C (-1.5 °F). The sky is often cloudy, and light snow often falls.
The ground is normally snow-covered until early May. Since the average amount of precipitation that falls in winter is not low, snowfall can sometimes be heavy, and the snow can exceed a meter (40 inches) in depth.
During
cold waves, the temperature drops to -40 °C (-40 °F) or below almost every year.
The coldest record in Pechora is -56 °C (-69 °F), set in February 1946.
The coldest month on average was February 1966, with a daily mean of -29.35 °C (-20.8 °F).
In fact, we are in the
coldest area in Europe, even colder than the Arctic coast, and the only one, together with Lapland, where the temperature can drop below -50 °C (-58 °F).
The absolute record in Europe is -58.1 °C (-72.6 °F), set on December 31, 1978 (the day on which many records were broken in central-northern Russia), in the village of Ust 'Schugor, located 95 km (60 mi) south of Pechora. On that occasion, the temperature in Pechora dropped to -52.5 °C (-62.5 °F).
However, since then the temperature has not dropped below -50 °C (-58 °F), and at most it dropped to -49.5 °C (-57.1 °F) in January 1999.
Summer, from June to August, is very mild, with fairly frequent rains and thunderstorms.
While it is true that in June it can still get cold, and in August the temperature already begins to drop,
July, with an average of 16 °C (61 °F), stands out as the mildest month, so much so that there are several warm days. However, it depends on the year, in fact sometimes it can get very cool, if not cold, even in July, with lows close to freezing and highs around 10 °C (50 °F).
Especially from mid-June to early August, there can also be
hot periods, generally of short duration, during which the temperature can reach or exceed 30 °C (86 °F). The hottest record is 35 °C (95 °F), set in July 2020.
