Climate chart - Orenburg
The climate of Orenburg is continental, with cold winters, during which the temperature below freezing, and hot summers.
Orenburg is a city of 565,000 inhabitants, the capital of the oblast of the same name, located in eastern European Russia, at almost 52 degrees north latitude and at the confluence of the Sakmara and Ural rivers. The latter, which flows at the southern edge of the city, represents the border, in the oblast of Orenburg, between Europe and Asia.
Due to its eastern location, at the gates of Siberia, winters are colder than in Moscow and the major cities of European Russia, even though they are located further north. Also, due to its location near the steppe of Central Asia (the border with Kazakhstan is about 90 kilometers or 55 miles to the south), the summer is hot for the latitude, and in general the climate is quite arid.

In fact, precipitation is quite scarce, amounting to around 350 millimeters (14 inches) per year.

Winter, from November to March, is very cold: the average temperature in January is about -12 °C (10.5 °F). The sky is often cloudy, and light snow often falls. Sometimes fog can form.
During cold waves, the temperature drops yo -30 °C (-22 °F) or below most years.
The coldest record is -43.2 °C (-45.8 °F), set in January 1969. The last time it reached -40 °C (-40 °F) was in February 1994.
January 1969 was also the coldest month, with a monthly daily average of -25 °C (-13 °F).

Summer, from June to August, is hot and sunny, with often notable differences in temperature between night and day, and with possible rain and thunderstorms, generally not intense. The average for July is about 22.5 °C (72.5 °F).
Sometimes there can be heat waves, during which the temperature can reach and exceed 37/38 °C (99/100 °F). The hottest record is 41.6 °C (106.9 °F), set in July 1952. In 2010, the average maximum temperature for the entire summer, from June to August, was 33.1 °C (61.6 °F). In 2021, the temperature reached 40.5 °C (105 °F) in late June and 40.8 °C (105 °F) in August.
