Climate chart - Nabereznye Chelny
The climate of Nabereznye Chelny is continental, with cold winters, during which the temperature is normally below freezing, and warm summers.
Naberezhnye Chelny is located in European Russia, on the banks of the Kama River (a tributary of the Volga), at almost 56 degrees north latitude and about 930 km (575 mi) east of Moscow. With 515,000 inhabitants, it is the second city of Tatarstan after Kazan.

Even though it is located at the same latitude as Moscow, the climate of Nabereznye Chelny is more continental, as it is located further from the Atlantic Ocean and closer to Siberia.

Precipitation is not abundant, since it amounts to about 565 millimeters (22 inches) per year. The least rainy period is from January to April, while summer is the rainiest season.
Precipitation generally occurs in the form of snow, predominantly or exclusively, from November to March, while in October and April it alternates with rain. On the other hand, in late spring and summer, it can occur in the form of thunderstorms.

Winter, from November to March, is very cold: the average temperature in January and February is around -11 °C (12 °F). The sky is often cloudy, and light snow often falls. The ground is normally covered in snow from mid-November onwards.
During cold spells, the temperature can drop below -30 °C (-22 °F), although this has occurred less frequently in recent years. Occasionally it has also dropped below -40 °C (-40 °F).
In the nearby city of Elabuga, the coldest record is -46 °C (-50.8 °F), set in January 1979. In the 1980s, the temperature dropped to a maximum of -37.3 °C (-35.1 °F) in January 1987. After 2000, it dropped to -37.7 °C (-35.8 °F) in December 2002.
In January 1969, the monthly daily average was -23.6 °C (-10.5 °F).

Summer, from June to August, is quite warm and sunny, although rains and thunderstorms are quite frequent.
Sometimes there can be heat waves, during which the temperature can reach and exceed 35 °C (95 °F), and which can be interrupted by strong thunderstorms and gusts of wind.
During the exceptional summer of 2010, the temperature reached 38.1 °C (100.6 °F) in July, a month when the average maximum was 32 °C (89.6 °F), and 39.1 °C (102.4 °F) in August.
