Lipetsk has a
continental climate (according to the Köppen classification, humid continental with warm summers - Dfb), with cold winters, during which the temperature is normally below freezing, and warm summers.
Lipetsk is a city of 500,000 inhabitants, the capital of the oblast of the same name, located in European Russia, on the banks of the Voronezh River, at 52 degrees north latitude and 370 km (230 mi) south-southeast of Moscow.
Precipitation is not abundant, since it amounts to about 570 millimeters (22.5 inches) per year. However, it is fairly well distributed throughout the year, although it increases in summer. It usually occurs in the form of snow from mid-November to March. Instead, in late spring and summer, it can occur in the form of thunderstorms.
Winter, from December to February, is very cold: the average temperature in January and February is around -6 °C (21 °F). The sky is often cloudy, and light snow often falls. The ground is usually covered in snow, although there may be periods when the temperature rises above freezing, usually only slightly, and rain, drizzle or rain mixed with snow can occur. Sometimes fog can form.
During
cold waves, the temperature drops by several degrees. On the coldest days of the year, it drops below -20 °C (-4 °F) almost every year. Occasionally, it can also drop below -30 °C (-22 °F).
Summer, from June to August, is warm and sunny, with an acceptable amount of sunshine, but also with fairly frequent rains and thunderstorms. The average in July is around 20 °C (68 °F).
Sometimes there can be
heat waves, during which the temperature can reach and exceed 35 °C (95 °F), and which can be interrupted by strong thunderstorms and gusts of wind.
