Kursk has a
continental climate (according to the Köppen classification, humid continental with warm summers - Dfb), with cold winters, during which the temperature is normally below freezing, and warm summers.
Kursk is a city of 415,000 inhabitants, the capital of the Kursk oblast, located in Western European Russia, at 240 meters (785 feet) above sea level, at almost 52 degrees north latitude and about 85 km (50 mi) from the border with Ukraine.

hot periods in which the temperature exceeds 30 °C (86 °F). The record is 38.8 °C (101.8 °F), set in August 2010. The summer of 2010 was exceptionally hot, so much so that the average maximum temperature was 32.3 °C (90.1 °F) in July and 31.3 °C (88.3 °F) in August.
