Climate chart - Kirov
The climate of Kirov is continental, with very cold winters and relatively warm summers.
Kirov (formerly Vyatka) is a city of 500,000 inhabitants, the capital of the oblast of the same name, located in European Russia, on the banks of the Vyatka River, at 58 degrees north latitude and about 785 km (485 mi) northeast of Moscow.

Precipitation is moderate, since it amounts to about 680 millimeters (26.5 inches) per year. As often happens in cold climates, the rainiest season is summer.
Precipitation generally occurs in the form of snow mainly or exclusively from November to March, while in October and April it alternates with rain. On occasion, however, it can even snow in September and May. Instead, in summer, precipitation can occur in the form of thunderstorms.

Winter, from November to March, is very cold: the average temperature in January is about -11.5 °C (11.5 °F). The sky is often cloudy, and light snow often falls.
The ground is normally snow-covered from early November to early April.
During cold waves, the temperature drops below -25 °C (-13 °F) every year. It has occasionally dropped below -40 °C (-40 °F), although the last time this happened was in late December 1978, with -44.8 °C. (-48.6 °F).
The coldest record is -53.4 °C (-64.1 °F), set in January 1940. This data seems doubtful, however, because it is decidedly out of scale with the other recorded values. Otherwise the record is -45.2 °C (-49.4 °F), set in December 1919.
The coldest month was December 1955, with a daily average of -23.4 °C (-10.1 °F).

Summer, from June to August, is very mild to pleasantly warm, with fairly frequent rain and thunderstorms.
While it is true that June can still get cold, and in August the temperature already begins to drop, July, with an average of 18 °C (64.5 °F), stands out as the mildest month, and with a greater probability of warm days. However, it depends on the year, in fact sometimes it can get very cool even in July.
Sometimes there can also be hot periods, during which the temperature can reach or exceed 30 °C (86 °F). The hottest record is 36.6 °C (97.9 °F), set in July 2010.
The 2010 summer was remarkably hot, so much so that the average maximum in July was 30 °C (86 °F).
