The climate of Izhevsk is continental, with cold winters, during which the temperature is normally below freezing, and relatively warm summers.
Izhevsk (formerly Ustinov), the capital of the Republic of Udmurtia, is a city of 650,000 inhabitants located in central-eastern European Russia, on the banks of the Izh River, at almost 57 degrees north latitude and about 970 km (600 mi) east of Moscow.

Precipitation is not abundant, since it amounts to about 515 millimeters (20 inches) per year. The driest period is from February to April, while summer is the wettest season. Precipitation usually occurs in the form of snow from late October to early April. Instead, in late spring and summer, it can occur in the form of thunderstorms.

Winter, from November to March, is very cold: the average temperature in January is around -12.5 °C (9.5 °F). The sky is often cloudy, and light snow often falls. The ground is usually snow-covered.
During cold waves, the temperature drops below -30 °C (-22 °F) almost every year. Occasionally it has also dropped below -40 °C (-40 °F), although the last time this happened was on New Year's Day 1979, with -46.8 °C (-52.2 °F), while the day before, on December 31, 1978, the coldest record had been set with -47.5 °C (-53.5 °F).
The coldest month was January 1969, with a daily average of -24.4 °C (-11.9 °F).

Summer, from June to August, is relatively warm and sunny. The average in July is around 19 °C (66 °F).
It can sometimes get very cool, if not cold, even in this season, especially in June and the second half of August. In addition, rains and thunderstorms are quite frequent.
On the other hand, there can sometimes be heat waves, during which the temperature can reach and exceed 35 °C (95 °F), and which can be interrupted by strong thunderstorms and gusts of wind. The hottest record is 38.1 °C (100.6 °F), set in August 2021. In July 2010, the temperature reached 37 °C (98.6 °F), and the average maximum was 29.9 °C (85.8 °F).
