Grozny, also known as Sölƶa Ġala, is a city of 300,000 inhabitants, the capital of the Chechen Republic, located in the extreme south of European Russia, on the banks of the Sunzha River (a tributary of the Terek), at 43 degrees north latitude and about 145 km (90 mi) from the coast of the Caspian Sea.
We are in the historical region of Ciscaucasia, the plain located north of the Caucasus. About 80 km (50 in) to the southwest, on the mountain ridge, lies the border with Georgia.
