Average weather, temperature, rainfall, sunshine hours
The climate of Arkhangelsk is
cold continental (according to the Köppen classification, subarctic climate - Dfc), with very cold winters and very mild summers.
Arkhangelsk is a city of 350,000 inhabitants located in northwestern Russia, at 64 degrees north latitude, at the beginning of the delta of the Northern Dvina, a river that then flows into the
White Sea. The latter can freeze in winter, being a closed sea, unlike the Barents Sea, which is located further north and receives the last branch of the Gulf Stream.
On the coast, in the southern part of the delta, is the city of Severodvinsk.
Precipitation is not abundant, since it amounts to about 625 millimeters (24.5 inches) per year. As is often the case in cold climates, the rainiest season is summer.
Winter, from November to March, is very cold: the average temperature in January is about -12 °C (10.5 °F). The sky is often cloudy, and light snow often falls.
The ground is normally snow-covered until April. Since the average amount of precipitation that falls in winter is not low, snowfall can sometimes be heavy, and the snow can reach a meter (40 inches) in depth.
During
cold waves, the temperature drops to -30 °C (-22 °F) or below every year, and once every few years it can even drop to about -40 °C (-40 °F).
The record is -43.2 °C (-45.7 °F), set at the end of December 1978.
Summer, from June to August, is very mild, with fairly frequent rains and thunderstorms.
While it is true that in June it can still get cold, and in August the temperature already begins to drop,
July, with an average of 17 °C (62.5 °F), stands out as the mildest month, so much so that there are several warm days. However, it depends on the year, in fact sometimes it can get very cool, if not cold, even in July, with lows close to freezing and highs around 10 °C (50 °F).
Especially in July and early August, there can also be
hot periods, generally of short duration, during which the temperature can reach or exceed 30 °C (86 °F). The record is 34.4 °C (93.9 °F), set in July 1972.
In 2010, there were eleven days with a high equal to or higher than 28 °C (82.5 °F) in July, when the temperature reached 33.8 °C (92.8 °F), and five days in August.
