Climate chart - Svolvær
The climate of Svolvær is subpolar oceanic, with cold winters and very cool summers.
The city is the administrative center of Lofoten, and is located on the island of Austvågøya, on the stretch of sea called Vestfjorden.

In winter, although the average temperature is around freezing, rain is more frequent than snow, because bad weather occurs with mild western currents, while colder periods, with currents from the east, are drier. Sometimes, however, it can also snow.
On cold periods, the temperature drops below freezing. On the coldest nights of the year, the temperature typically drops to -8/-10 °C (14/18 °F), but can sometimes drop lower. The coldest record is -15 °C (5 °F) and was set in February 1966.

In summer, daytime temperatures generally stay below 20 °C (68 °F), but sometimes there can be pleasant periods, in which they reach 23/24 °C (73/75 °F). More rarely, there may also be short hot periods. The highest record is 30.4 °C (86.7 °F) and was set in July 1972.

Since we are at the 68th parallel, therefore north of the Polar Circle, the sun does not rise (polar night) from December 8th to January 5th, and does not set (midnight sun) from May 26th to July 18th. The white nights, in which it is not completely dark even at midnight, occur as early as April 16th and until August 28th.
