The climate of Fez (or Fes), the second largest city in Morocco, can be defined as Mediterranean, even though the summer is particularly hot.
The city is located in the north of Morocco, in the hills to the north of the Atlas Mountains, at an altitude of 420 meters or 1,380 feet (while the airport, where the weather station is located, is at 580 meters or 1,900 feet).
During winter, short cold spells can occur, and sometimes it can even snow. In January 2005, the temperature dropped to -8 °C (17.5 °F).
In summer, heat waves from the desert can occur, during which the temperature can reach 45 °C (113 °F).
