Climate chart - Amman
Amman's climate is temperate semi-arid, with some Mediterranean characteristics, with mild, relatively rainy winters and hot, sunny summers.
Amman is a city of four million inhabitants, located in the west of Jordan, of which it is the capital, on the Transjordan plateau, and at 32 degrees north latitude. The altitude varies approximately from 670 to 1,000 meters (2,200 and 3,300 feet). The center is at 860 meters (2,800 ft). The western part of the city, located higher up, is cooler and rainier than the eastern part.
In the metropolitan area there are other cities, among the largest in Jordan, namely Zarqa, Russeifa and Sahab.

The precipitation is scarce, since it amounts to 245 millimeters (9.6 inches) per year at the airport, which is located in the lower part of the city, at 760 meters (2,500 ft). However, precipitation is concentrated from November to March, a period during which it is moderate. In the warm season, it almost never rains for a long period, from May to September.

Winter, from December to February, is mild, with an average January temperature of around 8.5 °C (47.5 °F). There are sunny periods, however, there are also periods of bad weather, with wind, rain and thunderstorms.
During cold air outbreaks, snowfall can occur, which occasionally, as in February 2003 and December 2013, can be heavy. Snow is more frequent in the western districts of the city, which, as mentioned, are located at a slightly higher altitude.
During these cold spells, the temperature usually drops to the freezing point or slightly below. In January 2008, the temperature dropped to -4.5 °C (24 °F) at the airport.

Summer, from June to September, is hot and sunny. The average temperature in August, the hottest month, is 27 °C (80.5 °F). Temperatures are not as high as in the south and east of Jordan, and in the afternoon the breeze blows from the Mediterranean Sea, however, the sun at these latitudes (and altitudes) is very strong.
In addition, there can sometimes be heat waves, during which the temperature can reach or exceed 37/38 °C (99/100 °F), and sometimes exceed 40 °C (104 °F). In these cases, however, humidity decreases considerably. The heat records from July to September are around 43 °C (109.5 °F).
