Climate chart - Aomori
Aomori has a humid temperate climate, with cold, snowy winters and warm to hot, rainy summers. Like the rest of Japan, the city is affected by the monsoon circulation: in winter, the northwest cold currents prevail, while in summer, they are replaced by hot and humid currents of tropical origin (although to a lesser extent than in central and southern Japan).
Aomori is a city of 270,000 inhabitants, located in Japan, in a bay, in the region called Tohoku, at almost 41 degrees north latitude.
We are on the northern tip of the island of Honshu, where the average temperature in January and February is slightly below freezing even on the coast.

Image of Aomori

Precipitation is abundant, since it amounts to 1,350 millimeters (53 inches) per year. Spring is the driest season.
Due to its location on the coast, exposed to cold winds from Siberia, which pick up moisture as they pass over the Sea of Japan, and then are forced to rise when they meet the mountains just south of the city (the Hakkōda Mountains, which reach 1,585 meters or 5,200 feet), Aomori is a particularly snowy city.
Snowfall, which normally occurs from November to March, amounts to a whopping 565 cm (222 in) per year, making it one of the snowiest lowland cities in the world. The airport, located south of the city and at an altitude of 200 meters (650 ft), is a little colder and even snowier.
Even though it snows a lot and often, the temperatures are not that low, and during the day they often go above freezing. In fact, even in the middle of winter rain can occur, or rain mixed with snow.
During cold waves, the temperature in the city usually drops to -8/-10 °C (14/18 °F) while at the airport it can drop to -15/-16 °C (3/5 °F).

In summer, the average temperatures are not too high, in fact during periods of bad weather, a cool wind blows from the northeast called Yamase. However, in this season, sunny periods, with hot and humid conditions, can occur (though more rarely than in Tokyo), and alternate with periods of bad weather, with wind and rain.
During heat waves, the temperature can reach 35/36 °C (95/97 °F).

From June to October (but especially from August to early October), Aomori can be hit by typhoons, although generally with less frequency and intensity than in southern Japan.

The cherry blossom (Sakura) in Aomori usually occurs from late April to early May. In fact, the Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festival, in Hirosaki Park, is held every year between April 23 and May 5.
