Average weather, temperature, rainfall, sunshine hours
The climate of Bandar Abbas is
subtropical desert (according to the Köppen classification, hot desert climate - BWh), with pleasantly warm winters and very hot, sunny summers. Precipitation, decidedly scarce, occurs mostly between December and March.
Bandar Abbas is a city of 525,000 inhabitants located in southern Iran, in the province of Hormozgan, at 27 degrees north latitude, on the coast of the
Strait of Hormuz, beyond which lies the Musandam peninsula, divided between Oman and the United Arab Emirates. In front of the coast there are islands, including Qeshm and Hormuz. To the north, on the other hand, there are mountains belonging to the Zagros chain, including Mount Genu, 2,350 meters (7,710 feet) high.
Winter, from December to February, is pleasantly warm, so much so that the January average, 17.5 °C (63.5 °F), is close to the threshold of the tropical climate. This is the only season of the year, along with March, the first month of spring, in which moderate rains occur.
Unlike in the interior of Iran, cold waves do not arrive here. However, there can sometimes be slightly cool periods, with lows of 5/7 °C (41/45 °F) and highs of 15/17 °C (59/63 °F).
Summer, from June to August, is very hot, with a combination of humidity and temperature among the worst in the world. In return, the wind blows constantly. Temperatures remain high even at night, sometimes even 32/33 °C (90/91 °F).
Due to the mitigating effect of the sea, it is not as hot as in Khuzistan province, however, sometimes the temperature can reach 45/46 °C (113/115 °F) from May to September. In June 2014 it reached 47.2 °C (117 °F).
In winter, the
sea in the Strait of Hormuz is a bit warmer than the Persian Gulf, and is even warm enough for swimming, as it does not drop below 22.5 °C (72.5 °F) in February. In summer, on the other hand, the sea is very warm, among the warmest in the world.
