In Mainz, the climate is slightly continental, with cold (but not freezing) winters and warm summers.

Mainz is a city of 220,000 inhabitants, located in the south-west of Germany, in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, at the confluence of the rivers Main and Rhine, and at 50 degrees north latitude.
Nearby, but on the other side of the river, in Hesse, are other cities (Frankfurt am Main, Wiesbaden, Darmstadt, Offenbach, and Hanau) and all together make up the metropolitan region Rhein-Main.

In winter, there can be periods of snow and frost. The temperature rarely drops below -10 °C (14 °F), although it has dropped below -20 °C (-4 °F) in the past.

In late spring and summer, thunderstorms can break out.

The best time to visit Mainz runs from mid-May to mid-September, since it is the warmest and sunniest period of the year.
