Climate chart - Tornio
The climate of Tornio is cold continental, with freezing winters and mild summers.
The city is located in central-northern Finland, in the northernmost part of the Gulf of Bothnia (known as Perämeri), which can freeze in winter. It is useful to recall that sea water freezes at about -2 °C (28.5 °F).
Beyond the border with Sweden is the twin city of Haparanda.
It is true that we are at the 65th parallel, therefore just south of the Arctic Circle, but due to atmospheric refraction, the midnight sun can be seen here as well, from 19 to 25 June. The white nights, when the sun sets but it doesn't get completely dark even at midnight, occur before and after the period of the midnight sun, ie from April 23rd, and until August 20th.
In winter, there can be cold spells of arctic origin. The coldest record is -41.7 °C (-43.1 °F) and was set in February 1966.
In summer, there can be short hot periods. The highest record is 32.7 °C (90.9 °F) and was set in July 1970.
