Climate chart - Quito
In Quito, there is a temperate, or subtropical mountain climate.
Temperatures are mild, spring-like throughout the year, while as regards to the rains, there is a dry season from June to mid-September, more pronounced in the northern part of the city. Fog can form all year round, at night and in the early morning.
Quito is the capital of Ecuador and is located in the north of the country, on the Andean plateau, at 2,850 meters (9,350 feet) above sea level, making it the second highest capital in the world after La Paz, in Bolivia. We are near the equator, which passes through the northern outskirts of the city (at San Antonio de Pichincha). Although the sun does not shine very often, given the geographical position and altitude, its rays are very strong.
The city is surrounded by volcanoes, starting with the Pichincha, of 4,794 meters (15,728 ft), which is located just west of the city. Other volcanoes in the area are Cotopaxi, of 5,897 meters (19,347 ft), Antisana, of 5,704 meters (18,714 ft) and Cayambe, of 5,790 meters (18,996 ft).
The neighborhoods on the western outskirts of Quito climb the slopes of the volcano up to about 3,200 meters (10,500 ft), while to the east, the Cumbayá valley is located at 2,350 meters (7,700 feet) above sea level, and has a temperature of 5/6 degrees Celsius (9/11 °F) higher than that of the city.
