Climate chart - Guayaquil
The climate of Guayaquil (or Santiago de Guayaquil), the second largest city in Ecuador, is tropical, with a rainy period from January to April and a dry period from June to November, while May and December are transitional months.
The city is located in the west of Ecuador, at 2 degrees south latitude, where the Guayas River receives the waters of the Daule River before widening into a delta. Across the river lies the city of Durán. To the southwest we find a marshy area called Estero Salado.
From January to April, the weather is typically tropical, in fact, both temperature and humidity are high, the rains are frequent and the wind is weak. The sky is often cloudy. Sometimes the rains are particularly abundant and can cause floods, especially during El Niño years.
Starting in May, the Humboldt Current gradually lowers the temperature of the sea and air, and inhibits the formation of rains. A moderate wind blows from the ocean. The sky remains often cloudy, even though the sun can come out in the central hours of the day.
