Climate chart - Tenerife South
On the southern coast of Tenerife, the climate is subtropical desert, with very mild winters and hot, sunny summers.
Meteorological data are collected at Tenerife Sur Airport, or Reina Sofía Airport, which is located near the towns of El Médano and Los Abrigos. This is a very windy area, as the northeastern trade winds slide along the coast. The airport is used to reach the tourist resorts in the southwest of Tenerife (see Playa San Juan, Costa Adeje, Playa de Los Cristianos, Playa de las Américas), which are much less windy because they are protected Mount Teide.
However, when the wind blows from Africa, the temperature rises by several degrees, the wind becomes weak, and the air is filled with desert sand and dust, becoming polluted. This phenomenon is called calima.
The cold record is 9.5 °C (49 °F), recorded in March 2011. The heat record is 44.5 °C (112 °F), recorded in August 1988.
