Climate chart - La Laguna
San Cristóbal de La Laguna is located on the hills of the north-east of Tenerife, in the autonomous community of the Canary Islands. The capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, is a short distance away, on the coast. The center of San Cristóbal de La Laguna is located at 540 meters (1,770 feet) above sea level, while the airport of Tenerife North (formerly Los Rodeos) is located at 630 meters (2,065 feet) above sea level. The latter is one of the two airports in Tenerife, and in the weather forecast it is often referred to as "Tenerife", although it has unusually low temperatures, compared to what can be expected in the Canary Islands.
In fact, due to the altitude and the exposure on the north side, La Laguna is considerably cooler and rainier than Santa Cruz and the coastal resorts of Tenerife. However, in summer, it rarely rains here as well, although fog often forms.
The coldest record is 2 °C (35.5 °F), set in March 1944. In January 1961 the temperature dropped to 3 °C (37.5 °F), while in March 2011 there was even a snowfall, though with a temperature of 5 °C (41 °F).
Despite the cool climate, when the wind blows from Africa, the temperature can reach or exceed 37 °C (98.5 °F) from June to September. In July 2009, it reached 41.5 °C (106.5 °F), with a minimum of 27 °C (80.5 °F), while in August 2020, it reached 39.5 °C (103 °F), but with a minimum of 29 °C (84 °F).
