Average weather, temperature, rainfall, sunshine hours
The climate of Nakhchivan is
semi-arid continental, with cold winters and hot summers (according to the Köppen classification, cold semi-arid or steppe climate, Bsk).
Nakhchivan (or Naxçıvan, Nakhichevan) is a city of 95,000 inhabitants, the capital of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, an exclave of Azerbaijan, located southwest of the country, between Armenia and Iran. The altitude is 875 meters (2,870 feet) above sea level, the latitude is 39 degrees north.
About 50 km (31 mi) to the east are the
Zangezur Mountains, whose highest peak, Kaputjugh, reaches 3,905 meters (12,811 ft) above sea level.
Nearby flows the
Aras River, which rises in Turkey, passes through Armenia and then flows into the Kara River, which in turn enters the Caspian Sea.
Precipitation is scarce, amounting to 265 millimeters (10.5 inches) per year. The rainiest period is from March to June, due to the clashes of air masses typical of spring, se well as the afternoon instability that generates showers and thunderstorms.
Winter, from December to February, is cold: the average temperature in January is around -1 °C (30 °F). Due to its location far from the sea and at pretty high altitude, winter in Nakhchivan is colder than in the major cities of Azerbaijan.
Sometimes, the wind from the south can bring mild air, so that the temperature can reach, and sometimes exceed, 15 °C (59 °F).
During periods of stable weather, fog can form.
Due to the arid climate, snowfall (and rainfall when the temperature is above freezing) is usually light.
During
cold waves, the temperature can drop to -20 °C (-4 °F) or below.
Summer, from June to August, is hot and sunny, despite the altitude, with some afternoon thunderstorms, more likely in June. The average for July and August is 26.5 °C (79.5 °F).
On the hottest days, the temperature reaches or exceeds 40 °C (104 °F).
