Climate in Lenkoran (Azerbaijan)

The climate of Lenkoran is transitional Mediterranean, with quite mild, rainy winters and hot, sunny summers (according to the Köppen classification, Mediterranean climate with hot summers - Csa).
Lenkoran (or Lənkəran) is a city of 88,000 inhabitants, located in the south-east of Azerbaijan, in the Lankaran-Astara region, on the coast of the Caspian Sea, at almost 39 degrees north latitude. The altitude is about 10 meters (33 feet) below sea level (the Caspian Sea is in fact a large salt lake that is located in a depression).

Precipitation is quite abundant, since it amounts to 1,150 millimeters (45 inches) per year. The rainiest season is autumn, the driest is summer.
Compared to Baku, which is also located on the coast of the Caspian Sea but further north, the rainfall is decidedly more abundant, due to the presence of the Talysh mountains, belonging to the Elburz, which force air masses to rise and condense.

Winter, from December to February, is quite mild and rainy. The average temperature in January is around 4 °C (39 °F).
However, different situations occur. During periods of stable weather, fog can form. The south-west wind, which descends from the mountains, can raise the temperature up to 20 °C (68 °F) and more even in this season.
Instead, the north wind can bring cold periods, and even snow. Typically, the temperature drops to -10 °C (14 °F) during the most intense cold waves, however, the record is -15 °C (5 °F), set in January 1990. In February 2020, the temperature dropped to -6 °C (21 °F) after a heavy snowfall, but in the previous days, with the south wind, it had reached 27.4 °C (81.3 °F).

Summer, from June to August, is hot and sunny, muggy but tempered by the breeze. The average in July is about 26.5 °C (79.5 °F).
During heat waves, the temperature can exceed 35 °C (95 °F). The record is 39.9 °C (103.8 °F), set in August 2001.
