Climate chart - Baku
The climate of Baku is slightly continental and arid, with quite cold winters and hot, sunny summers.

Baku is a city of 2,275,000 inhabitants, the capital of Azerbaijan, and is located on the Absheron Peninsula, on the coast of the Caspian Sea, at 41 degrees north latitude, and 28 meters below sea level (the Caspian Sea is in fact a large salt lake that is located in a depression).
About 30 km (18 mi) northwest is Sumgait, the second largest city in Azerbaijan, while nearby is Xırdalan (or Khyrdalan), the fourth.
Due to its location on a peninsula (the Absheron Peninsula), Baku is a windy city: the Khazri (cold northern wind) alternates with the Gilavar (warm wind from the south). In addition, there is the summer breeze.

Precipitation is decidedly scarce, since it amounts to 225 millimeters (8.9 inches) per year. Summer is the driest season, during which it almost never rains.

There are quite mild periods, during which the temperature can reach or exceed 15 °C (59 °F).
However, there can also be cold periods, with temperatures close to freezing, in which snow or rain mixed with snow can fall.
During cold waves, the temperature drops once every few years to -7/-8 °C (18/19 °F). The coldest record is -13.7 °C (7.3 °F), set in January 1990.

Summer, from June to August, is hot and sunny. The frequent winds reduce the feeling of heat. The average for July and August is 26.5 °C (79.5 °F).
There can be very hot periods, during which the temperature exceeds 35 °C (95 °F), and sometimes even 40 °C (104 °F). The highest record high is 42.7 °C (108.9 °F) and was set in July 2018. In August 2021, the average maximum was 35.3 °C (95.5 °F).
